Most of your brake line is steel tubing along the frame. The last stretch to each wheel has to flex, because the wheel steers and moves over bumps. That short piece is rubber, and rubber ages.

Each one gets checked for cracking, chafing where it passes near suspension parts, dampness at the crimped ends, and swelling. Hoses are cheap and they age together, so a bad one at one corner is a good reason to look hard at the other three.
If a wheel is dragging, cracking the bleeder briefly shows whether trapped pressure releases. If it does, the hose was holding it and the caliper is fine. That is a few minutes of work that can save you the price of a caliper you never needed.
